Frequently Asked Questions

Do you support the new Apple Safari browser?
Yes.

Are Java and JavaScript the same?
Java and JavaScript are not the same thing, nor are they really related. JavaScript is a scripting language that is used in web page development to set the properties of a web page. Java is a compiled programming language that is used to develop applications.

What browser versions do you support?
Currently we support Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. We favor Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). We do use quite a bit of JavaScript, which both Internet Explorer 4.x and Netscape 4.x and above support.

What are META tags and why are they important?
There are two META tags that are important to the search engines:

Keywords are META tag values that specify certain words to help Internet search engines index your site.

Descriptions are META tag values that also help various search engines index your site. Some search engines will actually use in their directory the very descriptions you specify to describe your site.

Visitors to your site won't be able to see the META tag information because is only visible inside your HTML.

Why does the type size appear smaller on a Mac than in Windows on a PC?
Unfortunately for all of us well-intentioned web publishers, HTML type appears much larger on Windows than it does on the Mac. Although they both display images at 72 DPI (dots per inch), Windows displays type at 96 dpi, whereas the Mac displays it at 72 dpi. This deceptively small technical difference results in much larger type on Windows.

Do you use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)?
We are strong advocates of using CSS on our pages; however, there is a slight disadvantage to CSS because they are supported only by 4.0 or later browsers.

What is a Plug-In?
In the early days of the web, any file that wasn't an HTML file had to be downloaded and required a separate "player" for the content to be seen. This was a hassle for most web surfers, because it meant that you had to break the flow of a good "surf" to view material in an external application. In response to this problem, Netscape introduced the idea of plug-ins, which extended the capability of HTML pages to display content that wasn't HTML-based. Today, a variety of plug-ins are pre-installed in most browsers. These can include QuickTime, Flash, Shockwave, Real Player and Acrobat Reader.

How does a seach engine work?
Here is how a search engine works ... your site is on a list to be spidered (done by submission). When the search engine spider visits your site it takes all TEXT on that page an starts to index the terms. Note: it will not index text on an image. From there it starts to follow links inside the site looking for only text on the pages. As it finds common phrases it starts to give it a rating. This will tell the search engine how important the phrases it finds are on your site. It continues until if has gone through all your links. So the more key seach words you have on pages, the better. The best thing to do is write a paragraph of text on the page that has the products on it. Take advantage of where you can put text.
